The Foundation is pleased to provide a grant, for a second year, to the 92nd Street Y tofill a critical arts education gap in New York City’s public schools.
The Schools Partnership Program (SPP), provides instruction in the visual arts, ceramics, music, dance, musical theater and Digital Design to students (Pre-K to 12) at six public schools. 92Y works with educators to design curriculum specific to the needs of each school community, training classroom teachers to integrate the arts into the core curriculum, and by providing on-site arts programs for students that also improve their literacy, problem-solving, and social skills.
For the 2015-16 academic year, The Richard Pousette-Dart Foundation sponsored arts education at the River East Elementary School. In one project, fifth-grade students learned about the history of shoes and made life-size ceramic shoes. Some fun fact learned were that left shoes were only made starting in 1818, and that Neil Armstrong left his boots floating in space because of concerns about bringing contamination back to Earth.
